It feels like Jump to Lightspeed has only been out for a second or two but LucasArts are already set to launch the second SWG expansion pack in just a few months. It would seem this sucker's been in development for a while behind closed doors.
Personally my days playing Galaxies became numbered when World of Warcraft came out. For all its flaws, I still hold a special place for this game though - particularly the space expansion, which is in my opinion the most epic of MMOs currently out there. As has been stated many a time before though, WoW has raised the bar for land-based MMORPGs considerably, and Galaxies' ground game is somewhat shamed in comparison.
This second add-on pack, subtitled Rage of the Wookies if you can believe that, is attempting to rectify this. It has nothing as grandiose as the previous add-on's entire new game mechanic, instead the emphasis here appears to be strictly on adding a ton of new ground content. This includes the Wookie home world as a new visitable planet, a massive 100 mission quest campaign and even new bionic implants (ever wanted to be half droid?).
Here's the blurb straight from the horse's mouth;
Be the first to experience Episode III related content in Star Wars Galaxies! For those who own Star Wars Galaxies™: An Empire Divided™, they can download and play the Star Wars Galaxies™: Episode III Rage of the Wookiees expansion on May 5, 2005 for a two week preview of Kashyyyk, the home planet of the Wookiees appearing in the highly anticipated Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Pre-Orders begin early April 2005.
Explore Kashyyyk - the home planet of the Wookiees is being added as an entirely new adventure planet and space zone
Adventure through over 100 story-driven quests - Join the Wookiees in their fight for freedom against their Imperial-supported Trandoshan slavers or support the Empire in their mission of quelling the spread of the Rebellion!
Visit and discover several points of interest and adventure zones including the Wookiee-run tree cities, Trandoshan-controlled slave camps and the safari lands of the affluent Rodians
Pilot new starcraft inspired by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith including Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter model
Enhance your character with radical new cybernetic parts that add special abilities and improve your performance in combat
Embark on daring new space mining missions to recover precious raw materials for sale to ground-based crafters. Surviving slews of pirates will provide unprecedented economic opportunities
And experience the all new combat system featuring new weapons, new armor, new effects and an all new user-interface to make combat even more engaging and fun!
Whether this turns out to be a much needed dollop of content, or simply a shameless Revenge of the Sith cash-in remains to be seen. Galaxies players won't have to wait long to find out however, and in the meantime there's a bunch of pleasing screenshots up on the LucasArts web site.
In other Galaxies news, it appears the fabled Combat Upgrade will (finally) turn up within the next month or two.
