I'm strictly in catch-up mode here, running through some of the incredible new trailers and video footage that's hit the net recently. PC shooter fans rejoice, the future is looking good!
Battlefield 2
 | | The new commander class promises to improve tactics and teamwork |
|
I love the Battlefield titles, despite a certain amount of Sims-style dilution in each of the various expansions and follow-ups. While all the vehicles rock big time, the biggest fault of the games is the somewhat stilted and lame on-foot action though.
Luckily Battlefield 2, the first true sequel to the original 1942 version, is looking to remedy that, by improving gun handling as well as introducing brand new classes and much loved ragdoll physics.
Never the less, the emphasis will always fall back on that kick-arse vehicle action at the end of the day, and boy does BF2 impress on that side of things. This recent trailer showcases everything from tanks to buggies to choppers, and it all looks, to be perfectly honest, fucking awesome.
Sadly the release date was recently pushed back, as is always the way of things in this industry, but expect BF2 to blow up on the clan scene when it (eventually) rolls around.

Day of Defeat: Source
This one on the other hand, is very disappointing. I dug Day of Defeat and was anxious to see how much the visuals had been improved by porting it over to the new Source engine, but sadly the answer is...not a lot. In fact, it's nowhere vaguely near as large a jump as that from Counter-Strike to its recent Source incarnation.
What you can't see in this footage though are the player models, so hopefully they'll bring some more obvious improvements to the overall look. Really though, the port still looks about four years out of date. A shame.

Doom III - Resurrection of Evil
 | | The Doom III gravity gun. How did they come up with that? |
|
While I loved playing through Doom III once, the fact it had about as much depth as a paddling pool means I'll most likely never touch it again. This expansion pack is looking to right a lot of the wrongs many found in the original though, by introducing more interesting weapons and abilities.
These include bullet time, a gravity gun and the classic Doom II double-barrelled shotty, although these various offerings all appear slightly underwhelming in this trailer.
Will it turn out to be a more entertaining and original title than the beautiful but simplistic original, or are the Doom games way passed their prime? In light of HL2, STALKER and FEAR, Resurrection of Evil is going up against some tough competition, that's for sure.

Unreal 3
Saving the best for last, here's a three part tech demo of the latest Unreal engine that is unquestionably the sexiest damn thing you'll ever see on a monitor (minus the infamous leaked Diggler sex tape).
This engine pretty much does it all; massive cities, real-time lighting, unparalleled particle effects and hilarious physics. Just thinking about all the endless projects and possibilities that developers could crank out using this technology makes me do a sex wee. Grab all three parts and prepare to witness the future of PC games. Simply incredible.
