Indeed, it's been revealed that a follow-up to last year's Battlefield 1942 clone Star Wars Battlefront is already well under way. Details are sketchy, but here's what's known so far.
First off, it'll include 16 new maps. As a nice surprise, it's been revealed these maps will be more objective orientated than yawnsome flag-capturing, with escort and destroy missions among others.
There'll also be proper space combat this time, a pleasing thought considering how limited and claustrophobic flight felt in the original game. The Death Star is even rumoured to be included.
Best of all though, Jedi classes will now be available to play, both light and dark style.
This is all in addition to improved AI, less latency, and much tighter graphics with faster frame-rates.
Before you get too excited, it's worth noting that the engine is to be a modified version of the original one, and it's with that in mind that this all starts sounding more like an expansion pack than a fully-fledged sequel. It's almost as if LucasArts are not only content to copy Battlefield 1942's basic premise, but also it's cash-in mod Battlefield Vietnam. A mere tarting up of the same basic game.
Still, I had some good fun with the original Battlefront, even if it was short-lived, and hope to see some of its problems addressed in this new incarnation. It's due out in fall 2005, but platforms have yet to be revealed.
