 | | The brunt of internet gags for far too long...I like my PS3. When I don't think about Untold Legends |
|
Finally, the PS3 hits European stores today. Plagued with a plethora of endless problems over the past couple o' years, including everything from ludicrous pricing structures to botched release line-ups and beyond, the lead-up to the PS3's release has been far from plain sailing. Truth be told though, as unfashionable as it may be, I'm enjoying my PS3 a heck of a lot more than my Wii right now, simply because...there are games to play on it.
Plus, ya know, it doesn't look like something's smeared arse on my telly.
It seemed appropriate to re-plug my PS3
feature from back in January in light of today's events then, so be sure to give that a good going over if you're on the fence about snagging one. I went into quite in-depth detail on the system, the games, and the online capabilities (or lack thereof), and it should hopefully put you on the right track in deciding whether one's for you or not.
It's worth noting however, that since writing that article, some all-too-important new developments have occurred in PS3 land. For one, the ever brilliant Virtua Fighter 5 has been released, undoubtedly a system seller for any sane fighting fan. Also just this week the long-awaited online version of Motorstorm touched down too...another grade A killer title that's continuing to grow with some fab downloadable content to boot. Not only that, but this month's firmware update has added some great new dashboard features, namely background downloading, PSP link-up improvements...and even the ability for your PS3 to
cure cancer. Sony...savior of humankind?
On the downside, the European model has severely gimped backwards compatibility, more in keeping with the 360's software-based model. This includes numerous non-working games, and a huge dollop of infamous "issues" in those that actually load. Something to know going in, if PS2 games are your thing.
In light of recent announcements regarding Playstation's upcoming Home service though, along with ace (not to mention exclusive) new titles like Little Big Planet and Ratchet & Clank, the future's looking far brighter for Sony than it has in quite some time I must say. I was pleased with my machine back when I snagged it around Christmas - even in spite of some mixed thoughts on the online front - but three months on I feel a whole lot more confident regarding the system, its capabilities, and more importantly, its future. Thinking about where this thing'll be a year from now actually makes me a little giddy, truth be told. Exciting times.
No doubt that price point still holds it back for many, and rightly so I'm sure, but as an early adopter, I don't regret my decision.
